Introducing your new Kxeen Arts Council (and newsletter!)

In June of this year, your local Arts Council went through a bit of a refresh - both in our identity, and in our board make-up. We’ve got a new logo, new name that recognizes the T's’msyen place name for this beautiful island we call home (Kxeen), and we’ve got many new faces on our eleven person board.

The current board for the Arts Council is now:

Heidi Richardson, President
Veronika Stewart, Vice President
Lani Dyck, Treasurer
Jessica Sallenback, Secretary
Sandra Cummings, Director
Coral Cargill, Director
Aurora Martin, Director
Tomasz Dysinski, Director
Nicholas John, Director
Carly Allen, Director
Karen Church, Director

While we’ve had a bit of turnover, we’ve been working to get our bearings and are hitting the ground running with new projects and initiatives, as well as the tried and tested things you love like our annual Craft Fair, film nights, and workshops. You may not have heard from us for a few months, but we’re back and excited to share what we’ve got in store.

October/November Events

Los Gringos Salvajes

LIVE Music at Wheelhouse!

Get ready to dance, Prince Rupert!

The mysterious back-alley milongas (dance halls) of Buenos Aires fuse with the lush tones of Canada’s Wetzinkwa watershed to create the sonic palette of Los Gringos Salvajes.

Fronted by Argentine songwriter Facundo Gastiazoro, the band features vibrant percussion, accordion, bass, lap-steel guitar, and horns.

Together, they craft sultry, evocative tunes that are at times melancholic, often irresistibly rhythmic, and deeply rooted in Argentine traditions yet boldly unique to this time and place. Prepare to cumbia, prepare to tango — or simply surrender to the dance.

The Choral is the third in our series of Fall films in partnership with the Lester Centre. Tickets are $13 for members and $15 for non-members and are available at the door. Films start pretty promptly at 7 pm.

Featuring Oscar winner Ralph Fiennes, the year is 1916 and the Great War is draining a Yorkshire town of its men, leaving the local choral society without voices. For a performance of Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, the society’s director, Dr. Guthrie (Fiennes), is forced to recruit his singers from among the town’s adolescent population. Guthrie is a demanding taskmaster, yet under his guidance these teens will come to know the transcendent joys of singing together, while steeling themselves for their impending conscription
